The share of working-age people (16 to 64) across the UK who are in work. It is a broader gauge than the unemployment rate, because it captures people who have left the workforce, not only those looking. When it rises, more households earn and more tax is paid; a fall can mean rising unemployment or rising inactivity, so read both.
