The total number of private-sector businesses in the UK. Roughly three-quarters are one-person businesses with no employees, and fewer than one in four employ anyone. When the count rises, more people are starting or running their own firm; when it falls, businesses are closing faster than new ones form, a sign of rising costs or weak demand.
