The number of people held in prison in England and Wales who have not been convicted or sentenced. Remand, custody before trial or sentencing, is meant to be exceptional, used where there is a risk of flight or further offending. A rising remand population means more untried people behind bars, driven largely by court delays; a falling one eases that.
