Legal Aid Spending
The total the state spends on legal aid, public funding for legal representation, for people in England and Wales who cannot afford a lawyer, across criminal and civil cases. It is best read in real terms, adjusted for inflation. When it falls, fewer people get help and more face the courts alone, which slows cases; when it rises, access widens.
