NHS Workforce

The size of the hospital and community NHS workforce in England, measured in full-time-equivalent (FTE) staff. It counts everyone employed by NHS trusts: doctors, nurses, ambulance crews, and support and admin staff. GPs and their practice staff are contracted separately and appear under GP Numbers in Primary Care. More staff means more capacity to treat patients; fewer means less.
