Debt

National Debt

The total the UK government owes, the sum of every past year's deficit. It never has to be repaid all at once, but it does have to be serviced, meaning interest paid every year. When the debt grows, so does that interest bill, already one of the biggest items in the budget, ahead of what the country spends on schools.
