What happened

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on Tuesday that the state pension triple lock will change from April 2030. The current policy raises pensions each year by whichever is highest: inflation, average wage growth, or 2.5%. From 2030, it will only rise with inflation and long-term wage growth, removing the 2.5% floor. Burnham says this will fund free social care. A Lib Dem MP accused him of gaslighting millennials over the change, whilst the Tory leader said the triple lock remains current Conservative policy.

New State Pension

The full new State Pension in cash per week, paid to those reaching pension age from April 2016 onwards. It replaced the older basic-plus-additional system with a single flat-rate payment. It is uprated by the 'triple lock', the highest of inflation, average earnings growth or 2.5%. Because so many people receive it, each rise adds substantially to public spending.
